Frequently asked questions about Filey

Getting started

How do I download my files with Filey?
Open the Filey app and click Download files. That’s it — Filey gathers your store files and product media, packs them into a single ZIP, and downloads it to your device.
Where do the backups get stored?
The backup downloads straight to your device the moment you click the download button. Filey doesn’t keep a copy of your files on our servers.

What Filey backs up

Will Filey make a full backup of my store?
No. Filey backs up your store files (the files in the Content → Files admin section) and your product assets (product images, videos and 3D models). On the Pro plan it also exports your blog posts, blogs, pages and navigation menus. It doesn’t back up the rest of your store data — orders, customers, themes and settings.
Do I still need a backup app if I have Filey?
For most stores, yes. Filey backs up the files in Content → Files plus product images, videos and 3D models — and, on the Pro plan, your blogs, pages and menus. Anything beyond that — orders, customers, themes, settings — needs a separate backup app.
Does Filey back up product description data as well?
No. For products, Filey exports the media only — images, videos and 3D models — not product descriptions or other product text. (On the Pro plan it does export the body text of your blog posts and pages, but product descriptions aren’t included.)
Can I use Filey like Rewind, with a weekly automatic backup?
No. Filey doesn’t offer scheduled or automatic backups. You download your files on demand from the app whenever you need them.

Plans & importing

What’s the difference between the Free and Pro plans?
The Free plan exports your store files and product media (images, videos and 3D models) as a one-click ZIP, with the store-content dashboard. Pro ($4.99/month) adds importing into another store, exporting blogs, pages and menus, automatically matching product media on import, choosing whether to replace or keep existing content, and organising product media into folders.
Can I import or transfer my files into another store?
Yes, on the Pro plan. Filey uploads your exported ZIP straight into another Shopify store — ideal for migrations and restoring a backup. Product media is automatically organised by product and re-attached, and you choose whether to replace or keep the content already there.

Privacy & data

Does Filey store any sensitive information?
No. Filey doesn’t store any information about the files you download. We keep only the basic user information needed for authentication. Read more on our Privacy Policy page.

Troubleshooting

I downloaded my files, but Shopify won’t let me upload more than 50MB. How do I fix that?
Unzip the archive before uploading. Shopify’s Settings → Files directory won’t accept a single large archive, so extract it first and upload the individual files from the unzipped folder. If you’re moving files to another store, you can skip this entirely and use Filey’s built-in Import (Pro plan) to push the ZIP straight into the store instead.
Filey can’t download my files — the progress bar is stuck. What can I do?
First, close any other open apps and try again — this usually happens when your computer runs low on memory mid-download. If it still won’t finish, your store likely contains more files than Shopify can process in one pass, which is a Shopify limitation outside the app’s control. Email us at support@inso.codes and our team will help you download your files manually.
